After two short sales hearings at the American TV channel HSN, its sales stocks containing over thousand printer units were totally emptied earlier this year. A third planned prime-time hearing was cancelled since the product stocks could not handle the unexpected large demand. On top of that, the product got the highest possible rating among the first buyers and became a ‘customer pick’ at HSN’s website.
After many years of technical development and at a cost of more than 6 million US dollars, PrintDreams RMPT™ technology has finally got its first commercial application. It is Xyron, a division of Esselte, who in October last year in a Las Vegas show announced a handheld printer for the Arts & Crafts industry, which is becoming an increasingly popular hobby in the US. First now volume shipments are taking place.
The new handheld printer Xyron® Design Runner™, uses a product concept originally developed by PrintDreams based on its RMPT™ lite technology. The product uses also inkjet technology from a global leading printer manufacturer in a first-of-its-kind handheld printer that bridges the gap between digital and traditional crafting.
This cordless, portable printer fits in the palm of a hand, giving consumers the ability to print directly on a variety of materials with the push of just one button – making it easier than ever before to print custom designs on fabric, wood, polymer clay, wallpaper and other surfaces. Crafters no longer need special printer adapters for odd-sized papers or for multi-step heat-based processes. The Xyron Design Runner also features a LCD display with a built-in guidance system for easy and accurate design alignment.
The Xyron Design Runner represents the market breakthrough of PrintDreams RMPT™ technology, which has created a lot of expectations among consumers since it was officially announced back in 2002 during the CeBIT show in Hannover, Germany.
Price and availability
Due to the large demand, product resellers are having waiting lists. The objective is that new incoming orders for the Xyron Design Runner will be shipped in February with a suggested retail price of 9. This pricing includes the handheld printer, a protective docking station, a 40-design sample Design Disc, one black inkjet cartridge, and two 9-volt batteries. • 2 additional cartridges, providing the ability to print in cherry red or forest green for up to 5,000 inches per cartridge.
All of the Design Discs have a suggested retail price of .99 with the cartridges suggested retail price of .99.
